Card payments declining on Square or Stripe: outage or the bank?
Cards declining at the till or online? Tell issuer declines from platform faults, and use Square or Stripe offline mode safely.
A customer's card declines. Then another. Now the queue is out the door and someone says "Square is down". Before you switch to cash-only, find out whether you are looking at a decline, an error, or a reader that is offline. Those are three different problems.
Decline, error or offline?
- Declined means the payment reached the card's bank (the issuer) and the bank said no. The platform is working.
- Error means the payment did not complete for a technical reason: a timeout, a processing error, or the platform failing.
- Offline means the reader or till could not reach the platform at all. That is usually Wi-Fi or the reader; see Stripe card reader offline.
Is it the platform?
Check the Square or Stripe page, which read the official status feeds. Then look at your own dashboard: are other payments from other cards succeeding right now? If yes, the platform is working and individual cards are being declined by their banks. If every payment from every card fails with errors, and especially if the status page names payments or card processing, it is the platform.
At the till: user steps
- Read the reason. Both Square and Stripe show a decline reason in the dashboard against the payment. "Insufficient funds", "expired card", "incorrect PIN" and "do not honour" are the bank talking.
- Contactless limits. In the UK, contactless payments are capped at £100. After a number of contactless payments in a row, the card's bank can also insist on Chip and PIN. Ask the customer to insert the card.
- Try another method. A phone wallet (Apple Pay or Google Pay) often works when a physical card is being refused, because it uses a different token.
- Ask the customer to call their bank if the same card keeps declining with "do not honour" or a generic decline. Banks block unusual spending patterns and only they can unblock it.
- Restart the reader if you see errors rather than declines, and check it has a network connection.
Offline payments: use them knowingly
Square supports offline payments on supported devices when they lose connection. Payments are stored and processed when the device reconnects, and Square says they must be processed within 24 hours. The catch: the card is not checked at the time, so if it later declines, the loss is yours. Stripe Terminal also supports offline collection on supported readers if your integration has it switched on. Set limits, and do not leave offline mode on as a permanent setting.
Online checkout: admin-level checks
- Decline codes. Stripe returns codes such as
insufficient_funds,expired_card,incorrect_cvc,do_not_honorandgeneric_decline. These are issuer responses.processing_errorand API errors are worth investigating on your side and the platform's. - Strong Customer Authentication. In the UK and EEA, many online payments need 3D Secure. A checkout that does not handle the challenge produces failures that look like declines (
authentication_required). - Fraud rules. Stripe Radar rules you added can block payments before they reach the bank. A "blocked" outcome is your rule, not the bank.
- Keys and mode. Test keys on a live site, or a recently rotated key that was not updated everywhere, break every payment while the status page stays green.
- Account status. A paused or restricted payment account, for example during a verification review, stops payments. The dashboard will show a notice.
When to escalate
Contact Square or Stripe support when payments from many different cards and banks fail with errors at the same time, your network is fine, and the status page shows an incident or stays quiet for more than a few minutes. Have payment IDs, times with time zone, and the error text ready. If the decline reasons are issuer responses, the bank is answering; there is nothing the platform can do, and the customer needs to call their bank.

FAQ
- Why are cards declining on my Square or Stripe reader?
- Most declines come from the customer's bank: insufficient funds, an expired card, a fraud block, or a request for Chip and PIN. If many different cards fail with errors rather than declines, check the official status page and your network.
- What's the difference between a declined payment and a payment error?
- A decline means the bank received the payment and refused it. An error means the payment did not complete for a technical reason, such as a timeout or platform fault.
- Can I take card payments when Square is offline?
- Square supports offline payments on supported devices. They are processed when the device reconnects and must be processed within 24 hours. If a card later declines, the seller carries the loss.
- What is the contactless limit in the UK?
- The UK contactless limit is £100 per payment. The card's bank can also ask for Chip and PIN after several contactless payments in a row.
