Xero won’t load, login loops, or bank feeds not updating
Xero stuck loading, two-step login failing, or bank feeds not coming through? Separate a Xero incident from browser, 2FA, and bank connection problems.
The bookkeeper opens Xero and gets a spinner, a blank dashboard, or a login page that keeps coming back. Or Xero loads fine but the bank feed has not updated since Friday and VAT is due. These are different problems with different owners. Xero itself, the browser, the login security, and the bank's feed connection can each fail on their own. Find out which before anyone spends the morning clearing caches.
Is Xero down?
Open our Xero status page, which reads Xero's official status board. Xero's board lists core services separately from connected services such as bank feeds, payment services and HMRC Making Tax Digital submissions. If an incident names the part you are using, stop troubleshooting and wait for updates. If everything is operational and a colleague can work normally, keep going — the problem is local.
Xero will not load
- Private browser window. Extensions — ad blockers, script blockers, password-manager injectors — break Xero's pages. A private window disables most of them.
- Another supported browser. Try Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, kept up to date. Old browsers and locked-down kiosk builds fail quietly.
- Clear cookies for Xero only. Remove site data for xero.com rather than wiping the whole browser, then sign in again.
- Another network. Phone hotspot versus office Wi-Fi. If the hotspot works, a proxy, DNS filter or SSL-inspection device in the office is interfering. See is it down or just me?
- Specific organisation. If the Xero dashboard loads but one organisation will not open, check the subscription status and that your user still has access to that organisation. Advisers often lose access when a client changes permissions.
Login loops and two-step authentication
- Two-step authentication uses an authenticator app (Xero Verify or another app). If codes are rejected, check the phone's time is set automatically — authenticator codes depend on the clock.
- Lost phone or new phone. Use your backup method or recovery process from Xero's login page. Only the user can complete Xero's identity checks; the organisation's admin cannot simply switch off another user's two-step.
- Login keeps returning. Third-party cookie blocking and aggressive privacy settings break sign-in redirects. Allow cookies for xero.com and its login domain, or test in a clean browser profile.
- Too many attempts. Repeated failed logins can temporarily lock the account. Wait, then reset the password from the login page.
Bank feeds not updating
Bank feeds depend on the bank and the feed provider, not just Xero.
- Check connected services on Xero's status board for your bank.
- Check the bank account in Xero. Open Accounting → Bank accounts. A message saying the connection needs attention usually means the bank's consent has expired. Under UK Open Banking, consent needs periodic renewal — reconnect the feed and re-authorise with the bank.
- Timing. Many feeds update once a day, and weekend transactions often appear on the next working day. A missing Saturday transaction on Sunday is normal.
- Import a statement. If a feed is down for days and you need to reconcile, export a CSV or OFX statement from online banking and import it manually. Watch for duplicates when the feed returns.
HMRC and Making Tax Digital
If a VAT return will not submit, check Xero's status board for HMRC connection issues and HMRC's own service availability page. Reconnecting the HMRC authorisation in Xero's VAT settings fixes many expired-authorisation errors. Do not leave submission to the last afternoon; HMRC outages cluster around deadlines.
When to escalate
Escalate to Xero support when the status page shows nothing but several users on different networks cannot load Xero, or when a bank feed fails after reconnection. Escalate to the bank when only their feed fails and Xero lists it as operational. A browser extension breaking the dashboard is a local fix.

FAQ
- Why will Xero not load?
- Check the Xero status page first. If it is operational, try a private window, another supported browser, clearing Xero cookies, and another network. Extensions and office filters are common causes.
- Why is my Xero bank feed not updating?
- Bank consent may have expired and needs reconnecting, the bank may be having issues, or the transactions are simply not due yet. Check connected services on Xero status and the bank account page in Xero.
- Why are my Xero two-step codes rejected?
- Authenticator codes depend on the phone’s clock. Set the time to update automatically. If you lost the device, use Xero’s recovery process from the login page.
- Can I still reconcile if the bank feed is down?
- Yes. Export a statement file from online banking and import it into Xero manually, then watch for duplicates when the feed resumes.

Thanks. That stays in this tab.
