Work PC problems: updates, apps, printers and remote access

Windows Update stuck, Company Portal apps pending, printer offline, RDP or a mapped drive won't connect? Desk checks first, then what admins should check.

This group is almost never an outage. Device tickets (the update that sits at 0%, the app stuck on "Pending" in Company Portal, the printer that shows offline, Remote Desktop refusing to connect, the mapped drive with a red X) come from the PC, its management policies, or the path to an internal server. Cloud status matters only for a slice of them: Intune and Windows Update are delivered from Microsoft's cloud, and a real incident there does delay things.

These are the tickets where a few minutes of desk checks save an hour of reimaging. Confirm the device is online and on the right network, give management tools time to check in, and capture the exact error code. The guides below put the user steps first and the admin checks after.

FAQ

Is Windows Update or Intune down?
Occasionally Microsoft has incidents that delay updates or Intune check-ins; admins see them in Microsoft 365 Service health. If only one PC is stuck while others update, the problem is that device.
How long should I wait for a Company Portal app to install?
Managed devices check in periodically, so a new assignment can take a while to arrive. Use Sync in Company Portal settings and restart before escalating; admins can see the install status and error code in Intune.
Should I reinstall Windows to fix a stuck update?
Almost never as a first step. Free up disk space, restart, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, and check whether your organisation's policy is holding the update back. Reimaging is a last resort.
Why does my mapped drive work in the office but not at home?
Internal file servers are usually only reachable on the company network or VPN. Connect the VPN first, then reconnect the drive; if it still fails, the guide covers DNS and credential checks.
