Notion slow, timed out, or stuck loading

Notion hanging on load, APIs timing out, or a workspace that never opens? Separate a Notion incident from browser, VPN and giant pages.

Notion sits on a spinner. A database view never finishes. The desktop app says it is offline while Twitter (sorry, X) still loads. People type "is Notion down?" into the checker and forward the screenshot to IT. Sometimes Notion has posted an incident. Often the page is enormous, the VPN is hairpinning traffic, or the browser profile is sick.

Is Notion down?

Open status.notion.so — that is Notion's official board. Use our URL checker against your workspace host as a second opinion from outside your office. If status.notion.so shows an incident, stop clearing caches and wait for their updates. If status is quiet and only your office fails, keep going. Notion's path often overlaps CDN and cloud providers; a wide Cloudflare or AWS event can coincide, but Notion's own status post is what you quote to the business.

User-level checks

1. Private browser window. Extensions that block scripts break Notion's editor. Password-manager injectors sometimes do too.
2. Another network. Phone LTE versus office Wi-Fi. LTE good / office bad means proxy, SSL inspection or DNS.
3. VPN test. Disconnect if policy allows. Full-tunnel VPNs make Notion feel offline when the office egress is congested.
4. Desktop app versus browser. If the app fails and notion.so works, quit the app fully and sign in again. If both fail, it is account, workspace or Notion itself.
5. Smaller page. Open a nearly empty page in the same workspace. If that is instant and the 20,000-row database is not, content size and views are the problem — not a global outage.
6. Guest versus member. Guests on restricted pages see permission errors that get reported as "Notion is broken". Confirm share settings.

Admin / workspace owner checks

• SAML SSO. Workspaces that enforce SSO fail for everyone when the IdP certificate expires. Test IdP sign-in separately (Okta / Entra).
• SCIM and seats. A user provisioned incorrectly may authenticate but see no workspaces. Check directory sync logs.
• API integrations and bots. Runaway integrations can rate-limit a workspace. Disable the last automation you installed and retest.
• Allowlisting. Companies that allowlist Notion domains must keep Notion's published domain and IP guidance up to date; stale lists look like intermittent timeouts after Notion changes infrastructure.
• Audit who owns the giant databases. Encourage filtered views, linked databases instead of one mega-table, and archiving old rows. Performance engineering beats another "Notion is slow" all-hands.

What to tell the team

Either: "Notion has posted an incident on status.notion.so — hold big edits" or "Notion is up; we are fixing our network path / SSO / this oversized database." Do not declare a vendor outage because one wiki page with fifty embeds spun for twenty seconds.

Desktop app caches

The Notion desktop app keeps a local cache. After a bad sync, quitting, clearing the app cache per Notion's help docs for your OS, and signing in again fixes stuck workspaces that the browser never showed. Export important pages first if you are unsure — clearing cache does not delete cloud data, but it does force a re-download.

Status habit

Bookmark status.notion.so next to your IdP status page. Screenshot the incident name and timestamp when you tell the company Notion is having a bad morning. Verbal "I think it's down" without a status link is how rumours start. Quiet status plus one slow page is a content or network ticket.

When to escalate

Open a Notion support case when status.notion.so is green, users on different ISPs and devices cannot load the workspace, and SSO is healthy. Include workspace URL, timestamps with time zone, browser versus desktop app, and whether the problem is one page or the whole workspace. For one overloaded database, fix the view design first.

How do I check if Notion is down?

Open https://status.notion.so/ and try your workspace on mobile data in a private browser. If status shows an incident, wait for Notion. If status is quiet and LTE works, the problem is local.

Why is one Notion database slow?

Large databases with complex relations, rollups and many simultaneous editors get slow even when Notion the service is healthy. Use tighter filtered views and archive old data.

Can VPN make Notion time out?

Yes. Full-tunnel VPNs that send Notion traffic through a congested office gateway cause spins and timeouts. Test off VPN if policy allows.
