Webex meeting won't join or keeps disconnecting
Webex join fails, app crashes on entry, or you drop mid-meeting? Client, browser, VPN and firewall checks before you declare a Cisco Webex outage.
Join Webex does nothing. Or the app opens, shows Connecting, then dumps you out. Or you are in for two minutes and the call drops while Slack still works. Webex tickets get written up as outages when the real fault is an old client, a proxy that hates UDP, or an SSO session that expired between the calendar click and the media connect.
Is Webex down?
Open status.webex.com — Cisco's official board for Webex Calling, Meetings and Messaging. We do not invent a Webex tile on this site; use their status plus our URL checker on the join host if you need an external path test. If Cisco has posted for Meetings in your region, stop reinstalling clients and watch their updates. Compare with Zoom join failures and Teams join only after you know which product the invite actually uses — calendar titles lie.
User checks
- Phone app on LTE. If mobile joins and the laptop does not, the laptop client or office network is the patient.
- Browser join. Use Join from browser on the Webex landing page. This bypasses a corrupt desktop install and broken protocol handlers.
- Update the Webex App (formerly Webex Meetings client). Security and media changes regularly invalidate old builds.
- Sign out / clear cache in the Webex App, then sign in again. Stale tokens after Conditional Access or password changes cause join loops.
- SSO path. If your org federates Webex through Okta or Entra, confirm other SSO apps work. A dead IdP blocks Webex even when status.webex.com is green.
- Disconnect VPN if policy allows and retry. Full-tunnel VPNs that hairpin media through another country drop Webex while HTTPS chat apps limp along. See VPN connected but no internet.
- Waiting lobby / host not started. Personal room meetings need the host. Attendees describe this as "won't join" when they are simply early.
Network and media
Webex wants HTTPS for signalling and UDP for media where possible. Firewalls that "allow Webex on 443 only" produce joins that succeed then audio/video that dies — or intermittent disconnects. Ask networking for Cisco's published Webex IP and domain ranges. Packet loss on the office Wi-Fi will look like Webex flakiness; prove it with LTE.
- SSL inspection. Break/inspect proxies that do not exempt Webex media domains cause certificate errors and failed joins.
- DNS filtering. Category filters sometimes miscategorise Cisco collaboration domains after a vendor rename (Webex Teams → Webex App).
- QoS / congested AP. Meeting rooms with one domestic access point and twenty laptops will drop Webex every Monday stand-up.
Admin causes
- Control Hub policies. Meeting join requirements (signed-in users only, authenticated domains, password required) reject guests who used to stroll in.
- Client version enforcement. Admins can block old clients. Users on pinned MDM versions fail until the package updates.
- Calling vs Meetings confusion. Webex Calling outages do not always take Meetings with them. Read which product status.webex.com actually named.
- Calendar integration. Broken Outlook or Google add-ins generate wrong join URLs. Copy the meeting link from Webex / Control Hub when invites look stale.
When to escalate
Escalate to Cisco when status.webex.com names Meetings for your org's region, or when home-broadband users and office users fail the same meeting ID. Escalate to networking when only one site fails and LTE works. Escalate to identity when only SSO users fail. One corrupt desktop install is a reinstall, not a carrier bridge.

FAQ
- Why won't Webex let me join?
- Try the mobile app on LTE and Join from browser. Update the Webex App, sign out and back in, and test without the VPN. Check status.webex.com before blaming Cisco.
- Why does Webex keep disconnecting mid-meeting?
- Usually packet loss, a full-tunnel VPN, or a firewall that mishandles media. Compare with phone LTE. If LTE is stable, the office path is the incident.
- Is Webex Calling the same as Webex Meetings?
- No. They share branding and sometimes clients, but status incidents are listed separately. Read which product Cisco named.
- Can I use Zoom instead during a Webex outage?
- Only if the organiser moves the meeting. Installing Zoom on your laptop does not repair a Webex meeting ID.
