Zoom meeting won't start or join button does nothing
Zoom won't start, join does nothing, or you land in a waiting room forever? Client, browser, SSO and network checks before you blame a Zoom outage.
The calendar says the meeting started. You click Join and nothing happens. Or Zoom opens then closes. Or you sit in a waiting room while the host swears they admitted you. People file this as "Zoom is down". Often Zoom is fine and the client, the browser, or the link is not.
Is Zoom actually down?
Open the Zoom status page (we mirror Zoom's official board). If Zoom has posted an incident that names meeting join or the client, stop reinstalling and wait for their updates. If status is clear, keep going. Audio or screen-share problems after you are already in the meeting belong in Zoom audio and screen share.
User checks
- Same meeting, another device. Phone app on LTE. If the phone joins and the laptop does not, the laptop client or browser is the patient.
- Desktop app vs browser. Many "Join does nothing" tickets are a pop-up blocker or a broken custom URL protocol handler for
zoommtg://. Try "Join from your browser" on the waiting page, or open the meeting link in a private window. - Update or reinstall the Zoom client once. Old clients fail against newer meeting security defaults (encryption, authenticated join).
- Sign out of Zoom and sign in again. SSO tenants especially: an expired IdP session leaves Join hanging. If you use Okta or Entra to reach Zoom, confirm you can open other SSO apps.
- Waiting room and host controls. If you are in the waiting room, the host (or alternative host) must admit you. Co-host confusion is not an outage. Ask in the calendar thread.
- Wrong account. Personal Zoom vs company Zoom. Joining a company webinar while signed into a free personal account can bounce you or demand a sign-in loop.
- Firewall / VPN. Corporate firewalls that only allow 443 sometimes still break Zoom if UDP media or specific Zoom domains are blocked. Test off VPN on LTE. See VPN connected but no internet if the tunnel itself is sick.
Link and calendar traps
- Expired or recycled PMI. Personal Meeting IDs and old recurring links get recycled or disabled. Generate a fresh link from the host's Zoom web portal.
- Outlook / Google Calendar add-in mismatch. The join URL in the invite must match the meeting the host actually started. Copy the URL from zoom.us → Meetings if the invite looks stale.
- Passcode required. Clients that strip the passcode from the URL leave you on a passcode screen that users describe as "won't start".
- Registration / webinar. Webinars that require registration reject join until the attendee uses the unique link from the confirmation email.
Admin checks
- Authentication profiles. Meetings that require users to be signed in to your Zoom account will reject guests. That is configuration, not downtime.
- SSO certificate expiry. When the SAML signing cert expires, nobody in the company can start or join authenticated meetings. Check the Zoom SSO config and your IdP.
- Client management policies. Zoom Device Management or your MDM may pin an old client. Confirm the minimum client version Zoom currently requires.
- Network allow lists. Zoom publishes domain and IP ranges for firewalls. If only the office fails and LTE works, send the network team that list rather than a vague "Zoom is broken" ticket.
- Concurrent meeting limits. Some plans limit how many meetings a licensed host can run. A second "start" fails while the first meeting is still live.
When to escalate
Escalate to Zoom when their status page names join/start for your region, or when users on home broadband and LTE all fail the same meeting ID. Escalate to identity when only SSO users fail. Escalate to networking when only one site fails. One laptop with a stuck zoommtg:// handler is a client fix, not a vendor bridge.

FAQ
- Why won't Zoom start when I click Join?
- Often the desktop protocol handler or a pop-up blocker is failing. Use Join from browser, update the Zoom app, or try a private window and another device.
- Why am I stuck in the Zoom waiting room?
- The host must admit you, or an alternative host must be present. This is a meeting setting, not a Zoom outage.
- Does a VPN fix a Zoom outage?
- No. A VPN changes your path to Zoom. If Zoom itself is down, wait for their status updates. A VPN can help only when your office path is the problem.
- How do I know if Zoom is down?
- Check Zoom's official status (mirrored on our Zoom page). If it is clear and colleagues join the same ID, the problem is local.

Thanks. That stays in this tab.
