Google Drive for desktop sync not working
Google Drive sync stuck, files greyed out, or streaming errors on a work PC? Quota, mirror vs stream, and Workspace admin checks before you reinstall.
Drive for desktop shows syncing forever. Or a file is available in drive.google.com and missing from File Explorer / Finder. Or every badge is a cloud icon and opening a document fails offline. People say "Google Drive is down". Often Workspace is fine and the desktop client, disk, or an admin policy is not.
Is Google Drive down?
Check the Google Workspace status page for Drive and Docs. If Google has posted a Drive incident, stop reinstalling clients. If Workspace is green and the browser shows your files, stay on this guide. Browser-only problems with Docs editors are a different ticket from the sync client.
User checks
- Browser first. Open drive.google.com in a private window. If files are there, cloud storage is answering. The desktop client is the patient — same pattern as OneDrive not syncing.
- Pause and resume sync in the Drive for desktop menu. Then quit the app fully and reopen.
- Sign out and sign in to the correct Work or School account. A leftover personal Google account on a work PC syncs the wrong My Drive and looks like "missing files".
- Streaming vs mirroring. Streaming (files on demand) needs network for first open. Mirroring wants local disk space. Know which mode IT set; switching modes mid-incident confuses users.
- Disk space. Mirroring a large My Drive onto a small SSD stalls. Free space or switch to streaming with IT approval.
- VPN / proxy. Full-tunnel VPNs and SSL inspection break long-lived sync connections. Test on LTE without VPN if policy allows.
- Filename and path problems. Characters that Windows dislikes, paths that are too long, and Office files left open through a conflict can pin a single item while the rest syncs.
Shared drives and shortcuts
Shared drives (formerly Team Drives) and Drive shortcuts behave differently from My Drive. A shortcut that points at a folder you lost access to looks like a sync bug. Confirm sharing permissions in the browser before rebuilding the client. See also Dropbox Business sync conflict for the same class of "permission vs client" mistakes.
Admin causes
- Drive for desktop allowed? Workspace admins can disable the desktop client or restrict it to company-owned devices. New starters on BYOD then "cannot sync".
- Storage quota. Shared drives and user quotas fill up. Uploads fail while downloads still work. Admins see this in Admin console → storage.
- Device approvals / Endpoint. Google Endpoint management can block unapproved desktops. The client may sign in then refuse sync.
- Bandwidth limits and LAN sync. Admin settings throttle transfer rates; a whole office on a small circuit looks "stuck" at 09:30.
- Known client bugs. Google posts client release notes. Pinning an ancient MSI through Intune recreates fixed bugs every Monday.
Repair steps that are safe
- Confirm browser access and quota.
- Quit Drive for desktop, restart it, pause/resume.
- Disconnect the account in preferences and reconnect (this does not delete cloud files).
- Reinstall the current enterprise installer from Google only after the above, and only on one machine as a test.
Do not delete the local Mirror folder because it "looks wrong" without confirming what is in the cloud — that is how you manufacture real data loss from a sync ticket.
When to escalate
Escalate to Google when Workspace Status names Drive for many customers, or when browser and desktop both fail across sites. Escalate to networking when only one office stalls and LTE works. Escalate to Workspace admins when quotas, device approvals or client policy block sync. One PC with a full disk is not a Google outage.

FAQ
- Why is Google Drive sync stuck?
- Usually the desktop client, disk space, wrong Google account, VPN/proxy interference, or an admin policy. If drive.google.com shows your files, the cloud side is up.
- What is the difference between streaming and mirroring?
- Streaming keeps files in the cloud and downloads on open. Mirroring keeps a full local copy and needs enough disk space. IT chooses the mode for work PCs.
- Will reinstalling Drive delete my files?
- Reinstalling the client does not delete cloud files. Deleting local mirrored folders without checking the browser can. Confirm drive.google.com first.
- Is this the same as OneDrive not syncing?
- Same class of ticket, different client. Check Google Workspace status for Drive, and use the OneDrive guide when the Microsoft client is the problem.
